Taron Egerton Says He’s Not the Next James Bond

Taron Egerton has stated that he does not see himself as the next actor to take on the role of James Bond. Despite speculation linking him to the iconic spy role following his success in films like Rocketman and the Kingsman series, Egerton made his view clear during a red carpet interview with Variety AU/NZ. He emphasized that he does not feel suited to the character and sees other candidates as better fits for the part.

His Thoughts on the Bond Legacy and Other Candidates

Egerton expressed respect for the legacy of the James Bond franchise, describing it as a “huge cinematic institution.” However, he said,

“I don’t think I’m right for James Bond. I’ve never felt that that was me.”

He added,

“I think there’s great candidates for it, and I think it’s obviously a huge cinematic institution. I don’t want to be dismissive about it as a thing. I just feel that my path is less… kind of grand and idealised.”

Previous Comments on Bond Casting and His Personal Suitability

This is not the first time Egerton has distanced himself from the role. In a 2025 interview with Collider, he remarked that he would not pursue the James Bond role in Amazon’s new franchise iteration.

“No. And I don’t think I’m a good choice for it. I think I’m too messy for that,”

he said. He also acknowledged his admiration for Bond and specifically praised Daniel Craig’s portrayal, stating,

“I really love the character and particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure. But I think I wouldn’t be good at it, and I think there’s so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.”

Egerton’s Presence at Tropfest and Industry Engagement

Egerton appeared on the red carpet at Sydney’s Centennial Park during the Tropfest short film festival on February 22. This year’s Tropfest jury included not only Egerton but also notable figures such as director James Cameron (appearing virtually), Australian filmmakers Danny Philippou and Dylan River, producer Bruna Papandrea, actress Sarah Snook, and festival president Margot Robbie.

The festival awarded Lianne Mackessy from Sydney for her film Crescendo, which the jury praised as “absolutely pitch perfect.” Egerton’s involvement in Tropfest highlights his continued connection to the film community beyond blockbuster acting roles.

Implications for the James Bond Role and Egerton’s Career Path

Egerton’s clear rejection of the James Bond role suggests the franchise’s future casting will continue to explore other promising young actors. His acknowledgment of the demands and expectations tied to the character underlines the distinctiveness of the Bond role in comparison to his own acting approach. Meanwhile, his active participation in festivals like Tropfest indicates a dedication to diverse storytelling and collaboration within the film industry, pointing to a career that values varied artistic projects over high-profile franchise leads.
