Zachary Levi Hosts Epic New Biblical Series on David

Zachary Levi, well known for his acting roles in popular films and TV shows, has taken on the role of host for David: King of Israel, a new four-part series premiering on Fox Nation. Drawing from his lifelong connection to biblical stories, Levi explores the deeply human narrative of David, offering viewers a fresh perspective on the Old Testament figure’s journey.

Raised in a Christian household, Levi was introduced early to Bible stories, but David’s tale stood out because of its relatable and compelling themes. Levi acknowledges that while Jesus’ story holds the greatest spiritual significance, David’s imperfections make him a figure who resonates more closely with many people. His challenges, errors, and ultimate redemption provide a narrative that feels grounded and accessible.

Exploring David’s Human Struggles and Redemption

Levi reflected on the complexity of David’s character during the series, emphasizing his humanity in contrast to the perfection often associated with Jesus.

“As humans, we struggle in our flesh, we struggle in our ego, we struggle in our lusts and desires and all of these things,”

Levi explains.

He continues,

“David was more human (than Jesus), more fallible, more like us. And still, even despite all of that, he had redemption and maintained his heart for God. And so I just have always found that to be such an incredible story and a powerful story.”

Levi’s Background and Previous Faith-Oriented Work

Known for his roles in Chuck, the Shazam movies, and Tangled, Levi has previously chosen projects with strong faith themes, including films such as American Underdog, Sarah’s Oil, The Unbreakable Boy, and The Star. These works align with his personal interest in stories that combine entertainment with spiritual insight.

A Blended Format: Documentary and Drama

David: King of Israel uses a mix of documentary storytelling and dramatic reenactments to paint a vivid picture of David’s life. The series traces his evolution from shepherd boy to powerful monarch, illustrating his bravery, flaws, passions, and transformation over time. Levi narrates the series, interweaving these scenes with contributions from scholars specializing in biblical history and archaeology.

Reflecting on Faith Throughout the Series

Levi describes his involvement in the series as a daily spiritual challenge rather than a moment of revelation.

“That’s kind of part of the nature of faith — it’s to believe in that which you cannot taste or touch or see or prove outside of what you feel inside,”

he remarks.

He also comments on the ongoing human struggle to overcome ego and survival instincts, stating,

“We must die to our own flesh daily, we must recognize that the ego and survival and all of these things that are very intrinsic to the human condition, you must battle against those things, because it’s easy to fall into that. It’s easy to fall into worry and anxiety and anger, and particularly in the world that we’re living in right now.”

The Series’ Appeal Beyond Faith-Based Audiences

Levi believes the documentary holds significance even for viewers unfamiliar with the Old Testament or lacking a faith background. He stresses the importance of recognizing the historical basis behind these narratives, stating,

“So long as you’re willing to at least recognize that there’s some historic value to these stories, that they’re not just mythology, that there were real people.”

He adds,

“There’s still archaeologists and historians who recognize that there is historical fact that backs up a lot of this. Even just to watch it from that point of view — I think it’s fascinating. This is a part of our history, collectively as human beings, and I think all of that’s important.”

Levi also compares the series to popular epic dramas, highlighting its dramatic and fantastical elements. He states,

“Pretty cool epic drama, like ‘Game of Thrones’ … with witches and giants and all kinds of stuff that you would normally find in fantasy writing, like ‘Lord of the Rings’ — but this is in the Bible.”
