Chris Hemsworth Calls Leaving L.A. His ‘Greatest Decision’

Chris Hemsworth revealed during a recent episode of the SmartLess podcast that moving away from Los Angeles with his family was his “greatest decision.” The actor and his wife, Elsa Pataky, made this choice several years into their marriage, leaving L.A. to raise their children in Hemsworth’s native Australia amidst the height of his Marvel success.

The Motivation Behind the Family’s Move From Los Angeles

Hemsworth explained that the decision to leave Los Angeles coincided with the birth of his sons and dissatisfaction with life in the city.

“It was right around the time my boys were born, and it was just, we kind of were set up in L.A. and not enjoying it, you know?”

he said.

“Like nothing was shooting there. We were filming kind of everywhere else and then… you’d come home and paparazzi and all the sort of the trappings of, you know, living in that space.”

The constant presence of paparazzi and the pressures of Hollywood life contributed to their choice to relocate.

How the Move Has Positively Affected Hemsworth’s Life

Despite concerns that leaving Los Angeles might harm his career, Hemsworth stressed that the move did not interrupt his professional trajectory since he often traveled for filming. He described living in Australia as a rejuvenating experience:

“You know, when you come back from work, you wanna go on a holiday? Like coming home for me is — it feels like a holiday,”

Hemsworth said.

“We have a big farm and horses and motorbikes and surf.”

This lifestyle provided a stark contrast to the intense and demanding atmosphere of Los Angeles.

Declining Film Production in Los Angeles and the Timing of Hemsworth’s Move

Hemsworth’s departure from L.A. happened well before the COVID-19 pandemic, which later accelerated challenges for the city’s entertainment industry. Recent reports indicate a continuing decline in filming activity in Los Angeles, with a 12.3% drop in production days for film, TV, and commercials in the last quarter of 2025 compared to the previous quarter. This decrease follows a downward trend starting in 2022, leaving 2025 production levels at roughly half of what they were in 2019.

Hemsworth’s Career Milestones Surrounding the Relocation

Chris Hemsworth entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thor in 2011, shortly after his Hollywood debut as George Kirk in J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 Star Trek reboot. By the time he and Pataky decided to leave Los Angeles, he had appeared in multiple Marvel films, including The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. His career continued strong with roles in blockbusters like 2016’s The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Ghostbusters. Hemsworth is set to reprise his role as Thor later this year in Avengers: Doomsday.

The decision to step away from the traditional Hollywood base has allowed Hemsworth to balance his family life and career effectively, demonstrating that success in the entertainment industry does not require permanent residence in Los Angeles.
