Zack Snyder Hints SnyderVerse Could Still Return, Fans Hope

Zack Snyder initially planned a five-film arc for the DC Extended Universe, beginning with 2013’s Man of Steel. This storyline continued through Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and was intended to conclude with a trilogy centered on Justice League.

However, midway through production of the first Justice League movie, Warner Bros. removed Snyder from the project. Joss Whedon was brought in to oversee rewrites and direct extensive reshoots. The final 2017 release suffered critically, and after years of fan-led campaigning under the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, Zack Snyder’s full four-hour version premiered on HBO Max in 2021.

The Possibility of Snyder’s Justice League Sequels

The SnyderCut left open the potential for sequels, but none have come to fruition, despite persistent fan calls for Warner Bros. to revive the SnyderVerse. In a discussion with Josh Horowitz, Snyder cautiously addressed whether his planned sequels could still happen.

“I would never say that there’s no way,”

he said, acknowledging the ups and downs he experienced during the making of the Justice League.

“I would never because I was on the ride that created Justice League. And if you were in my shoes, there were numerous times, dark times, when I would say there is no chance that there will ever be my version of Justice League. It will never exist, and it can’t.”

Snyder pointed out the obstacles he faced, including budget concerns and studio politics, but also praised the fan support that made the SnyderCut possible.

“Cost, politics, everything stood against it, and yet it exists. And you know, I think the fans should never forget that they did that,”

he affirmed.

“They also raised a ton of money for suicide prevention, and they really did a lot of good. I think that they catch a lot of flak for being toxic or whatever, but they literally saved human lives. So, you can go f*** yourself if that’s what you think.”

Exploring Other Formats for Continuing the SnyderVerse

When asked if he might adapt the remaining stories into comics or animated projects, Snyder showed openness to the idea, reflecting modern possibilities in storytelling formats for his work.

“We’ve absolutely talked about it quite a bit. I mean, we live in a world where all that’s possible, and whatever form it would take, that would be amazing.”

The New Direction of DC Under James Gunn’s Leadership

The SnyderVerse faces significant challenges with the reboot of the DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, who launched a fresh start with a new Superman film. Snyder shared a measured perspective on their approach to the characters and the future of the franchise.

“I mean, James has been very kind. I wish them all the best. [My] three movie trilogy is a weed that just won’t die, and so it grows on its own. It has its own life and i not concerned with James’s Superman, which is amazing. I can’t wait to see the next movie, and it’s just awesome. It just really to me it’s it’s just not the same thing. It’s just like a different thing.”

He also complimented Gunn’s storytelling style, highlighting its unique tone and cultural impact.

“James is singular in his storytelling in his ability to channel a mythological pop culture into what I would consider an iconic and very particular point of view that’s both poignant and funny. He’s the best at it that I can think of, and I think that he’s a great steward of that world. That’s great for fans.”

Uncertain Future for the SnyderVerse Amid DC’s New Era

Despite Snyder’s goodwill toward the current DC leadership, fans remain hopeful that the SnyderVerse might receive a proper conclusion. Surprisingly, James Gunn has not yet collaborated with Snyder to create an animated continuation or series, which fans speculate could succeed on streaming platforms like HBO Max, potentially rivaling projects such as Creature Commandos.

At present, no official projects related to Snyder’s planned Justice League sequels are underway. Nevertheless, some insights into these potential sequels have emerged, keeping anticipation alive among dedicated followers.
