Zack Snyder recently praised Ben Affleck’s performance as Batman, declaring him the best actor to portray Bruce Wayne. Snyder made these comments during an interview marking the 10th anniversary of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the film in which Affleck debuted as the iconic superhero.
In the discussion with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Snyder reflected on the casting process and shared how he became certain that Affleck was the right choice for the role, despite the initial controversy surrounding the decision among fans and critics.
The Moment Snyder Realized Ben Affleck Was the Ideal Batman
Snyder explained that his belief in Affleck as Batman began with a simple but decisive act. He created a drawing by placing a Batman cowl over a photocopy of Affleck’s face, which helped him visualize the actor in the role before making the final casting decision.
“I did a drawing where I took Ben’s face, and I put the cowl on it,”
Snyder said.
“I know it sounds dumb, but I literally took a Sharpie and drew the cowl on top of some photocopy of Ben’s face. I guess I convinced myself in that moment that was the way.”
That moment convinced Snyder that Affleck’s portrayal would be his Batman. He believed Affleck embodied the qualities necessary not only for the superhero but also for Bruce Wayne, Gotham’s billionaire socialite, a role Snyder still staunchly supports.
“He’s the most obvious Bruce Wayne, I think, of all the Batmans,”
Snyder shared.
“Of anybody who’s played Batman, Ben is the best Bruce Wayne.”
Physicality and Character Traits Aligned with Snyder’s Vision
Part of Snyder’s enthusiasm for Affleck stemmed from his physical presence, which matched the director’s desire for a Batman with imposing stature and strength. Snyder has long wanted his Batman to have the look and feel of a brawler, someone formidable in combat.
“He’s also all the things I like in a Batman. He’s legitimately a big dude, right? He’s 6’5 with his boots on,”
Snyder stated.
“He’s got that physicality that I always longed for in my cinematic Batman. I’ve always wanted him to be a brawler. I needed that. Even with what I did with the body and the suit and everything, I wanted him thick. I just wanted him to really be able to hurt you.”
These qualities helped Snyder settle on Affleck as the definitive Bruce Wayne for his cinematic universe.
Convincing Ben Affleck to Accept the Role
After becoming convinced about Affleck’s suitability, Snyder faced the challenge of winning the actor’s agreement to take on such a well-known character. Their conversations over several lunches played a key role in sealing the deal.
“But once I was locked in on it, and I had those few lunches and conversations with Ben, I felt like he understood that I cared deeply about what I kind of graphically wanted Batman to be, and I think he saw that and was like, ‘All right, F— it. Let’s do it.’”
That mutual understanding set the foundation for Affleck’s journey as Batman, leading to his powerful performances in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and other films.
