Gaten Matarazzo leads the cast of the upcoming stoner comedy titled Pizza Movie, set to premiere on Hulu April 3. This new film, co-written and directed by Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher—known as BriTANick—promises to redefine the genre for Generation Z with a fresh, offbeat buddy comedy centered around a chaotic pizza delivery adventure.
A Fresh Stoner Comedy to Define Generation Z
In Pizza Movie, a close group of friends finds their typical college night of smoking weed and ordering pizza quickly spiraling into chaos. The film’s plot follows this crew as a simple pizza pickup turns into a wild and unpredictable journey. Alongside Gaten Matarazzo, familiar from Stranger Things, the cast includes Sean Giambrone of The Goldbergs and Lulu Wilson from The Haunting of Hill House, supported by a strong ensemble featuring Jack Martin (La Brea), Sarah Sherman (Saturday Night Live), Marcus Scribner (Boston Blue), Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Andi Mack), Caleb Hearon (The Devil Wears Prada 2), and Justin Cooley (Kimberly Akimbo).
Set largely in a dormitory environment, the film captures the quintessential college atmosphere with lofted beds and strings of twinkle lights. Early images reveal scenes of Matarazzo and Giambrone lounging on a couch, momentarily distracted by a mysterious red creature, alongside surreal instances of out-of-body experiences. Meanwhile, Wilson’s character appears to be embarking on a separate, intense personal quest, adding layers to the story’s psychedelic and humorous tone.
Creative Minds Behind Pizza Movie and Their Upcoming Work
BriTANick—Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher—have established themselves as sharp and inventive creators, and Pizza Movie is their latest collaboration. Their talents are also showcased in another upcoming release, Over Your Dead Body, an action comedy thriller directed by Jorma Taccone of The Lonely Island. This film adapts the Norwegian cult hit The Trip, telling the darkly comedic story of a couple on vacation who secretly plan to kill one another. The cast boasts Jason Segel and Samara Weaving in leading roles, promising a blend of suspense and humor with strong performances.
Pizza Movie will first be seen by attendees at SXSW on March 13 before launching widely on Hulu on April 3. This film aims to offer a unique take on the stoner comedy, delivering a mix of surreal visuals and sharp humor, appealing to Gen Z audiences looking for a new kind of chaotic comedy experience.
