Taylor Sheridan’s Mayor of Kingstown Returns for Final Season

The crime drama Mayor of Kingstown, created by Taylor Sheridan, has returned to production for its final season. Known for the Yellowstone universe, Sheridan has expanded his influence in television with shows like Lioness, Tulsa King, and Mayor of Kingstown, which continues to enjoy strong audience engagement. The fifth season has been confirmed as the series’ conclusion.

Co-creator, producer, and actor Hugh Dillon recently provided an update from the set, announcing that filming on the last batch of episodes is now underway. His social media post showed the crew gathered near a vehicle on a rainy country road with the caption:

“Season 5 here we go!!!”

Renewal and Episode Changes for the Final Season

Following the tense season 4 finale that aired in December, official confirmation arrived in January that Mayor of Kingstown would return for just one more season to bring closure to the story of Mike McLusky and his family’s efforts to maintain order in the city. Unlike the previous seasons, which each contained 10 episodes, the upcoming season is shortened to 8 episodes.

No premiere date has been revealed yet, but with production now active, the show’s new season could debut later in 2024 or early 2025. Past release dates have varied considerably, with seasons premiering in November 2021, January 2023, June 2024, and October 2023.

Returning Cast and Missing Characters for Season 5

The core ensemble is expected to return to close out the storylines. This includes Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky, Edie Falco portraying Nina Hobbs, Taylor Handley as Kyle, Tobi Bamtefa as Bunny Washington, Laura Benanti in the role of Cindy Stephens, Derek Webster playing Stevie, Necar Zadegan as Evelyn Foley, and Hugh Dillon as Ian Ferguson.

However, the conclusion of season 4 also meant the departure of several key figures. Lennie James (Frank Moses), Lane Garrison (Carney), Nishi Munshi (Tracy), and Hamish Allan-Headley (Robert) are not anticipated to return. The season finale featured Kyle’s killing of Merle Callahan (Richard Brake), a development that may influence new episodes, along with Ian Ferguson’s newfound lottery win.

Future of Taylor Sheridan’s Television Universe

Although Mayor of Kingstown is ending, Taylor Sheridan’s creative output in television remains robust. Tulsa King has been renewed for a fourth season, and a third season of Lioness is also confirmed. Additionally, the Yellowstone universe is expanding with the recent premiere of Marshals on March 1 and The Madison premiering on March 14, continuing to build on Sheridan’s influential storytelling world.
