Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 has premiered, deepening its ties to Legendary’s MonsterVerse films by setting its story shortly before 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The new episodes incorporate flashbacks to highlight key characters and their initial interactions with the powerful kaiju that dominate this universe. Anders Holm’s portrayal of a young Bill Randa stands out as he deliberately distances himself from mimicking John Goodman’s iconic role from Kong: Skull Island.
Holm, who embodies the younger Bill Randa, spoke with CBR’s Grae Drake about portraying this character at an earlier point in the timeline. Despite the inevitable comparisons to John Goodman’s 2017 performance, Holm consciously avoided replicating Goodman’s mannerisms. He explained that while he considered adopting some of Goodman’s traits, he chose instead to bring his own interpretation, focusing on exploring new facets of the character rather than simply echoing the established portrayal.
Anders Holm’s Approach to Portraying Bill Randa
When asked about incorporating nuances from Goodman’s work in Kong: Skull Island, Holm stated,
“You know, I thought about it, and then I was like, ‘Dude, don’t handcuff yourself to something, because then you’re going to be like, did I do the thing in the scene at all, right?’ And the truth is, John Goodman’s unreal. And if I try and be John Goodman, everyone’s going to go, ‘Hey, man, you couldn’t. You didn’t.'”
—Anders Holm, actor
Rather than trying to imitate Goodman, Holm sought to delve into Bill Randa’s earlier life, before his descent into obsession and instability. Reflecting on the character’s trajectory, Holm shed light on how Randa’s story unfolds across different timelines and mediums, distinguishing his portrayal from the one audiences saw in Kong: Skull Island.

Holm added,
“But what I did do is, I knew what he was doing in his timeline, as far as just being a man who’s on the B side of a spiral. He’s already kind of had it, and is losing his marbles. And I’m like, ‘Who’s this guy before? Was he hopeful? Was he passionate?’ He kind of had to be, and the writers teed all this stuff up beautifully.”

Thanks to Monarch’s extended storytelling format, Holm is afforded the opportunity to reveal a more nuanced and hopeful version of Bill Randa—one that contrasts with the weary and unhinged man portrayed by Goodman in the films. This enables viewers to witness the character’s transformation in greater depth.
Exploring Bill Randa’s Story and Legacy in Monarch Season 2
Within Monarch’s flashback-driven narrative, Bill Randa’s story occupies a crucial role. Fans already know how his journey concludes—with Randa meeting a brutal fate amid the monstrous threats on Skull Island during the 1970s. By this later point, his mental stability has deteriorated significantly, a trajectory Holm’s portrayal begins to illuminate by showing Randa’s earlier mindset and emotions.
Season 2 centers on uncovering the traumatic events that triggered Bill Randa’s fixation on Titans. The opening episode hints at his inaugural encounter with these creatures, revealing Randa as the lone survivor of the USS Lawton’s sinking, caused by monster activity. This harrowing experience is pivotal, as it sets in motion the character’s obsessive path and the larger crises affecting the MonsterVerse.
Monarch also expands on Randa’s family legacy, emphasizing the roles of his son and grandchildren. Cate Randa, portrayed by Anna Sawai, and Kentaro Randa, are integral to the unfolding story, playing substantial parts in Monarch’s ongoing responses to escalating kaiju attacks. Additionally, Bill’s wife Keiko, who returned from Hollow Earth at the end of Season 1, remains a key figure in the narrative, enriching the familial and emotional stakes.
Looking Ahead: What to Expect from Bill Randa’s Journey
Anders Holm’s portrayal brings a fresh and compelling dimension to Bill Randa, inviting audiences to connect with the character on a deeper level before his descent into chaos. While viewers are aware of Randa’s grim fate, the series offers a chance to understand the person he was and the motivations that shaped his actions.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 continues to build on its connection to the MonsterVerse, complementing the films by filling in critical backstory elements and providing a richer context for Randa’s character. As the season progresses, the focus on Randa’s transformation and his family’s ongoing struggles promises to enhance the emotional and narrative complexity of the show.
