The television series Love Story, centered on John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, has rapidly gained popularity, but actress Daryl Hannah strongly opposes its portrayal of her character. Hannah, who previously dated JFK Jr., criticizes the show’s depiction as misleading and unfair, accusing executive producer Ryan Murphy of fabricating damaging falsehoods about her personal history.
Hannah Details Falsehoods and Misogynistic Portrayals in the Series
In a detailed essay for the New York Times, Hannah expressed deep frustration over the distorted image presented in the series. She highlighted that the character bearing her name is shown negatively—as “irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate”—portrayals she says are deliberate and inaccurate. Furthermore, she denounced the show’s portrayal of her as a cocaine user desperate to marry Kennedy, vehemently denying these claims.
“I have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties,”
Hannah stated, addressing the false allegations.
“I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone’s private memorial. I have never planted any story in the press. I never compared Jacqueline Onassis’ death to a dog’s.”
Hannah also accused the series of indulging in “textbook misogyny” by framing her as a rival to Bessette, which she rejects outright.
Impact of the Show’s Narrative on Hannah and the Kennedy Legacy
Since the show’s release, Hannah reports receiving numerous hostile and threatening messages from viewers who accept the show’s version as truth. She warns that her silence should not be mistaken for acceptance of these fabrications, explaining that discretion has made her a target of false judgments.
“My silence should not be mistaken for agreement with lies. Apparently, my discretion makes me a target,”
she wrote.
“Know that most (if not all) of those claiming to have any intimate knowledge of our personal lives are self-serving sensationalists trading in gossip, innuendo and speculation.”
Hannah further condemned the series for treating the tragic deaths of JFK Jr. and Bessette, who died in a 1999 plane crash, with irresponsibility and disrespect.
Current Status and What Lies Ahead
Hannah, who has been married to musician Neil Young since 2018, awaits an official response from Ryan Murphy and the producers of Love Story, who have yet to publicly address her accusations. The controversy surrounding the Ryan Murphy Love Story controversy highlights tensions between dramatized storytelling and respecting the truth of real individuals affected by the series’ narrative.
