Gillian Anderson Exposes Ageism Ahead of Women’s Day

In a new video released just before International Women’s Day, actress Gillian Anderson confronts the issue of ageism faced by women over 50, highlighting how society often renders them invisible. The clip, part of L’Oréal ParisLessons of Worth series, brings attention to the discrimination against aging women, urging a shift in perception and greater respect for aging as a natural and valuable experience.

Gillian Anderson Highlights the Reality of Ageism

Gillian Anderson opens her three-minute message by pointing out a disturbing trend where women over 50 seem to “disappear” from public view, particularly in Hollywood. She describes the phenomenon:

“There’s something really crazy, concerning, ridiculous going on. Well, there are hundreds of things, but let’s stick to the one thing that we maybe can do something about,”

Anderson says. She stresses how women’s presence diminishes once they reach a certain age despite previously being noticed and valued.

“You’re noticed, you’re needed, you’re whistled at, you’re even hit on. And then — poof — a few years later, you don’t exist. You’re in the way. They wonder what the hell you’re still doing here,”

Anderson explains.

According to her, this marginalization happens globally, but she insists that aging should be welcomed, respected, and celebrated. Anderson rejects negative stereotypes about older women, asserting,

“Because even if you think I’m easy to dismiss as an angry, menopausal feminist, the fact is I have never felt better.”

She continues,

“I have never felt more alive in my skin, clear-headed, purposeful, free of self-judgment, and while my body might be surprising me and frustrating me sometimes, in truth, I feel like I have gained — not lost — gained. Gained perspective, confidence, wisdom and definitely, if not more than ever, the desire to say [censor beep] off.”

After the censor beep, Anderson openly declares her refusal to fade away:

“I’m a voice and a mind and a body stronger and more present and more unfiltered than ever.”

She concludes with the empowering phrase associated with L’Oréal Paris, “because I’m worth it.”

The Role of L’Oréal Paris and Lessons of Worth Series

The Lessons of Worth campaign began in 2020, aiming to spotlight L’Oréal Paris ambassadors who not only represent beauty but also offer powerful voices that encourage women to embrace self-worth and life in their entirety. Olivier Monteil, L’Oréal Paris’ senior vice president of global image, explained that these ambassadors are seen as extraordinary women capable of inspiring others. He said,

“extraordinary women who have a voice, and a voice that can help other women to embrace not only their beauty, but their approach to life and to self-worth.”

The series has featured well-known figures like Viola Davis, Elle Fanning, Eva Longoria, and Kate Winslet, each presenting unique perspectives on age and culture. Monteil noted,

“‘Lessons of Worth’ came as this media to voice their experience and how valuable it can be to support other women.”

Historical Impact and Broader Significance

Gillian Anderson’s influence goes beyond this campaign. In the 1990s, her role as Dana Scully on The X-Files encouraged many women to pursue scientific careers, a cultural impact known as “The Scully Effect.” Monteil remarked,

“This series has encouraged women to embrace scientific careers.”

He added that promoting female representation remains a significant goal for L’Oréal Paris, an effort exemplified by their support for prominent women over 50, such as Jane Fonda, Helen Mirren, and Andie MacDowell, who serve as powerful role models and leaders within the brand.

Monteil also referred to consumer research revealing that 70 percent of women feel invisible as they age, underscoring the relevance of Anderson’s advocacy. Inspired by this reality, Anderson took creative control of her message with McCann, crafting a candid script to challenge societal biases about age and gender.

The Message’s Timely Release and Expected Influence

Anderson’s video premiered two days before International Women’s Day, a symbolic moment to amplify conversations around women’s visibility and rights. Its release by L’Oréal Paris supports a broader aim to reshape narratives around aging, urging society to recognize the strength and value of women across all stages of life.

With her powerful address, Gillian Anderson not only calls out unfair ageism but also embodies resilience and authenticity. Her message is poised to inspire women worldwide and encourage brands and media to reflect more inclusive and diverse representations that celebrate age rather than hide it.
