Holland got close to the part but lost out to Ansel Elgort, a disappointment that hit him hard as he had hoped the film would be a major step forward in his career.

“I thought that that film for me was going to be, like, my stepping-stone into a young-adult career,”
adding,
“I didn’t get the role, and it really beat me up. I remember being really angry about it.”

Dominic, who has his own history with professional setbacks but achieved recognition including the 1993 Perrier award for ‘Best Newcomer’ at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, provided guidance that proved invaluable to his son. Tom recalled,
“My dad sat me down, and we spoke about dealing with rejection. He’s had to deal with rejection his entire life in his career, and he was really kind and said, ‘Son, that’s part of success. If you won every single time, winning would become losing.’”

Following these disappointments, Holland’s career took a significant turn when he debuted as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016, with his first solo film release in 2017.
