Steve Carell Admits He Never Liked Crazy, Stupid, Love Title

Steve Carell revealed that he was never fond of the title Crazy, Stupid, Love during the early stages of the 2011 romantic comedy, despite starring in it alongside Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, and Emma Stone. The actor admitted that finding a fitting name for the project was a surprisingly difficult process.

Carell, known for his role in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, explained in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that the film’s title was originally undecided when writer Dan Fogelman completed the script.

The Challenge of Naming Crazy, Stupid, Love

Steve Carell disclosed that Dan Fogelman submitted the screenplay without a title, referring to it simply as the “Untitled Dan Fogelman Project.” Carell said,

“I do now, but when Dan Fogelman wrote it, he didn’t title it. He didn’t call it anything. It was Untitled Dan Fogelman Project.”

The star, now 63, noted that everyone involved had suggestions for the movie’s title, but none seemed to fully capture its essence.

Ultimately, the studio intervened to finalize the name. Carell recalled Warner Bros.’ decision as straightforward:

“Finally, Warner Bros. just said, ‘We’re calling it Crazy, Stupid, Love,’”

to which Carell modestly responded, “Alright.”

Despite his initial lack of enthusiasm for the title, the movie proved successful both commercially and critically, which reassured Carell about the impact of a film’s name.

He pointed out,

“I’m convinced that if it’s good and people like it, people will like the title,”

further emphasizing,

“Doesn’t even matter what you call it.”

Steve Carell’s Enduring Impact as Michael Scott

Beyond Crazy, Stupid, Love, Steve Carell maintains a strong connection with fans through his iconic portrayal of Michael Scott in the NBC series The Office. Carell continues to be amazed by the show’s appeal, particularly among younger viewers.

In an interview with NBC Insider, Carell remarked,

“I think it’s funny how young people are when they first start watching The Office,”

acknowledging that he initially underestimated its draw for a younger demographic:

“which was always a surprise to me because I never thought it would be appealing to a younger audience.”

He recognized that the show’s characters resonate beyond office settings, reflecting archetypes relatable to viewers’ school experiences as well.

Carell elaborated,

“I think part of it is that each of the characters is an archetype that can be translated to people that they know in school,”

adding,

“They’re all people that you can identify with—whether you’ve ever worked in an office or whether you’ve just associated with these people in school.”
