James Cameron Reflects on Saturn Awards’ Longstanding Support for Genre Films

James Cameron, known for directing blockbuster genre films, received multiple honors for his work on Avatar: Fire and Ash. Despite being overlooked in major Oscar categories for directing and best picture, Cameron praised the Saturn Awards for consistently recognizing and honoring genre projects. He referred to the awards’ history of backing sci-fi and fantasy films, tracing his relationship with the show back to the 1984 release of The Terminator.

Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd, Cameron declared,

“They dismiss us, and yet consistently over time, of the top 20 movies in history, or the top 20 films of the past 10 years — they are our films,”

highlighting the endurance of genre films in mainstream cinema. He added,

“Sci-fi, fantasy, horror. We make the films that put people in the theaters and keep the theaters open.”

Cameron took home awards including Best Science Fiction Film, Best Film Direction, and Best Film Screenwriting, which he shared with collaborators Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Earlier in the ceremony, director Guillermo Del Toro presented Cameron, producer Gale Anne Hurd, and the surviving cast of 1986’s Aliens with the George Pal Memorial Award commemorating the film’s 40th anniversary.
