Arnold Schwarzenegger Returns to Relaunch Conan Franchise

Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger is teaming up with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie to revive the Conan the Barbarian franchise, a character that originally propelled Schwarzenegger to fame with the 1982 film. This new reboot will revisit the iconic story, drawing from the original King Conan tales by Robert E. Howard, and is anticipated to explore Conan’s rise and challenges as a king. The announcement was made recently, marking a significant return for Schwarzenegger under the spotlight of the Arnold Sports Festival.

A New Chapter for Conan Under Christopher McQuarrie’s Direction

Christopher McQuarrie, known for directing the last four Mission: Impossible movies, is set to both write and direct the upcoming Conan film. The storyline will continue beyond Conan’s liberation from slavery, following his reign as king. As Conan grows complacent in power, he faces numerous rivals vying for his throne, leading to a turbulent period marked by conflict and chaos.

Arnold Schwarzenegger described the plot during the project reveal:

“It’s a great story where Conan was a king for 40 years. As the king, he gets complacent, and now he gets forced out of the kingdom, slowly. Then there’s conflict, of course, and then he somehow comes back, and then there’s all kinds of madness and violence and magic and creatures,”

Schwarzenegger said. He added that modern studio technology and special effects will allow the film to be really big, emphasizing the scale and impact expected from the relaunch.

Broader Returns for Schwarzenegger in Iconic Action Roles

In addition to the Conan reboot, Schwarzenegger is reportedly preparing for comebacks in other legendary franchises including Predator and Commando. Conversations with director Dan Trachtenberg, who reinvigorated the Predator series with Prey (2022) and its sequel, Predator: Badlands (2025), are underway. Moreover, Schwarzenegger has received a script for Commando 2, in which he would reprise his role as Colonel John Matrix, signalling a broader resurgence of his classic action hero personas.

Significance of the Conan Relaunch and Future Prospects

Reinvigorating the Conan franchise with Arnold Schwarzenegger at the helm and Christopher McQuarrie directing reflects a strategic effort to blend nostalgic appeal with contemporary filmmaking techniques. This relaunch taps into the enduring popularity of the King Conan stories while promising a fresh and expansive adaptation. Given Schwarzenegger’s involvement in multiple iconic series, fans can anticipate a renewed era for these classic characters, potentially shaping the next chapter in action cinema.
