Alfred Molina (born Alfredo Molina; 24 May 1953) is an English and American actor known for his roles on stage and screen. He gained prominence in the West End and has received a Drama Desk Award as well as nominations for two BAFTA Awards and three Tony Awards. His film career includes notable roles in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Frida, and as Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2. Alfred Molina was born Alfredo Molina in the Paddington district of London, England. His parents were both immigrants; his Spanish father from Murcia was a waiter who had parachuted into France with the Special Operations Executive before D-Day, while his Italian mother worked as a cleaner. He attended Cardinal Manning secondary modern Roman Catholic school and decided to become an actor after seeing Spartacus at the age of nine. He later attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. At the age of 21, he anglicized his name to Alfred at the urging of his first agent.
