Dev Patel was born on 23 April 1990 in Harrow, North West London, to Indian parents Anita Patel, a care worker, and Raju Patel, an IT consultant. His parents are Gujaratis who were both born in Nairobi in British Kenya before immigrating separately to the United Kingdom as teenagers and meeting in London. Patel was raised in the Hindu faith, grew up in the Rayners Lane district of Harrow, and speaks some Gujarati. His family roots trace back to Jamnagar and Unjha in Gujarat.
Patel attended Longfield Primary School and Whitmore High School, where he first discovered a love of performance. His first acting role was as Sir Andrew Aguecheek in a school production of Twelfth Night.
