Joaquin Rafael Phoenix (born October 28, 1974) is an American actor and producer widely regarded as one of the preeminent actors of his generation. Known for his roles as dark, unconventional and eccentric characters in independent film, he has built a career defined by intense commitment and a willingness to inhabit deeply flawed figures. Joaquin Rafael Phoenix was born at the Hospital Metropolitano San Francisco in the Río Piedras district of San Juan, Puerto Rico, to John Lee Bottom, a landscape gardener, and Arlyn “Heart” Bottom (née Dunetz), who had worked as an executive secretary at NBC. He is the third of five children, following siblings River and Rain, and preceding Liberty and Summer, all of whom have been involved in acting. He also has a paternal half-sister, Jodean.

Soon after Joaquin’s older brother River was born, the family joined the religious group Children of God and traveled throughout the Caribbean and South America as missionaries, where the next two children were born. The family eventually grew disillusioned with the group and left in 1977, settling in Florida, where the youngest child was born. Around that time, they legally adopted the surname Phoenix, inspired by the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes. When Joaquin was three, he and his siblings witnessed fish being stunned during a fishing trip, an event that prompted the entire family to adopt a vegan lifestyle.

Path to Acting

In 1979, when his father could no longer work because of a spinal injury, the family moved to Los Angeles, where his mother met a high-profile child agent named Iris Burton. Burton helped get the children into commercials and small television parts, and Joaquin made his acting debut alongside his brother River in the 1982 television series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
