On-screen she introduced the character Kelly Kapoor and combined acting with growing responsibilities behind the camera, including directing and production work during her tenure.
Her experience on The Office led to a Universal Television development deal and, later, the creation of her own series. Kaling parlayed that platform into film roles and voice work, appearing in ensemble and animated projects while continuing to write and produce original television comedies.

Since founding Kaling International she has taken on production roles across formats, including voice-work and executive producing for animation and live action. Notable later projects include voice and executive-producing duties on Velma and co-creating the Netflix sports comedy Running Point; she has also produced for theatre and supported short film projects that reached awards consideration.
