Benedict Cumberbatch (born 19 July 1976) is an English actor whose work spans theatre, television, and film. He first drew major attention for portraying Stephen Hawking in the 2004 BBC film Hawking, then achieved international recognition as Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock from 2010 onward, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for the role. His film career includes leading parts in The Imitation Game, the Hobbit trilogy, Doctor Strange within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and The Power of the Dog.
