“By about that time, 2007, 2008, it was pretty obvious that nothing was happening. My 30s were ending, and I was going to have to think about what I was going to do with the rest of my life. Now, I knew I could go back, and I could work at home, but I didn’t know that. I thought, I don’t really, I’m not sure that that’s what I want to do. So I had a time limit on it, and then that time limit ran out. And then I thought, what am I going to do?”
Mendelsohn recalled.
Choosing to return to Australia, Mendelsohn took supporting roles in several films, including Nicolas Cage’s 2009 thriller Knowing, which was partly shot in Australia. He also appeared in the 2008 movie Australia, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. Although he was finding work, the prominent roles he aspired to remained elusive at this stage of his career.
The Breakthrough with “Animal Kingdom” and Hollywood Recognition
Between 2008 and 2009, Mendelsohn took on multiple jobs in Australia, culminating with his performance in the crime drama Animal Kingdom in 2010. The film, which featured actors like Guy Pearce and Joel Edgerton alongside Mendelsohn, earned critical praise and led to Jacki Weaver receiving an Academy Award nomination.
