Nicholas David Offerman (born June 26, 1970) is an American actor, comedian, carpenter, and writer. He first gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the deadpan libertarian Ron Swanson on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, which aired from 2009 to 2015. Offerman has built a varied career across television, film, stage, voice acting, and book publishing, and he has also operated a woodworking shop in Los Angeles since 2001.
Beyond Parks and Recreation, Offerman has appeared in the FX series Fargo, the FX on Hulu limited series Pam & Tommy, and the HBO drama The Last of Us. He has acted in independent films, lent his voice to several animated franchises, written four semi-autobiographical books, and co-hosted the NBC reality competition series Making It alongside Amy Poehler.

Nicholas David Offerman was born in Joliet, Illinois, on June 26, 1970, the son of nurse Cathy Roberts and social studies teacher Ric Offerman. His father taught at a high school in nearby Minooka, where Offerman was raised Catholic and attended Minooka Community High School. He was trained in carpentry by his father, a skill that would later become central to his identity and career.
Offerman received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign in 1993. During his college years, he developed a strong interest in theater and performance. That same year, he and a group of fellow students co-founded the Chicago theater company Defiant Theatre, marking the beginning of his professional involvement in the performing arts.
Offerman’s parents were initially bewildered by his desire to pursue acting. In 2019, they launched the podcast In Bed with Nick and Megan, in which they discuss their personal lives and interview guests.
