Nicole Kidman & Jamie Lee Curtis Lead Scarpetta TV Comeback

Jamie Lee Curtis and Nicole Kidman reunite in the much-anticipated television adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta series, premiering on Prime Video March 11. This collaboration brings together the Oscar-winning actresses as they co-executive produce and star in a crime mystery set in Virginia, with Curtis playing Scarpetta’s free-spirited sister and Kidman taking the lead role of Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a forensic pathologist.

The project marks a significant moment in entertainment, as it showcases the evolving prestige of television roles compared to film. Curtis reflects on this shift with surprise, recalling a dramatic stunt from her blockbuster days,

“I guarantee you when I was … literally hanging under a helicopter above the Florida Keys over the Seven Mile Bridge in Florida, I did not imagine I’d be sitting in New York City that many years later with Nicole Kidman,”

Curtis said.

“Not only being co-bosses on a show, but then also playing her slutty sister. I was not imagining that as my future.”

Bringing Forensic Pathology to Life Through Scarpetta

Nicole Kidman embodies Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a medical examiner who unravels complex murder cases, including one tied to a cold case from three decades prior that shaped her career. To portray this role authentically, Kidman prepared extensively by spending time with a Tennessee medical examiner, learning the skills of scalpel handling and organ identification. Her personal connection to the novels dates back to her family’s enthusiasm for the books.

“My sister and my mother were obsessed with the novels, so I would read them,”

Kidman shared.

“When I mentioned it to my sister, she was like, ‘Well, I mean, that’s it. You have to do it.’”

Long Road to Adapting Cornwell’s Beloved Novels

The journey to bring the Scarpetta novels to the screen has been lengthy, with many options explored over the years and several high-profile actors considered for the role, including Demi Moore, Angelina Jolie, and even Kidman in the past. However, these previous adaptations did not materialize. A crucial turning point occurred when Kidman met Curtis at the 2021 Oscars and later learned Curtis was leading the new project. Kidman’s timing aligned with the show’s development, stating,

“I have a philosophy where characters come to you at the right time.”

Reflecting on her decision to accept the role, she added,

“Here she is, and I’m ready now.”

Curtis headlines the show as Dorothy, Kay Scarpetta’s free-spirited sister, a role she initially did not plan to play but accepted at Kidman’s behest. The eight-episode first season is led by showrunner Liz Sarnoff, known for her work on Lost and Barry, who is a longtime admirer of Cornwell’s books.

Talented Ensemble Cast Supporting the Series

The cast includes an array of accomplished performers, such as Bobby Cannavale, an Emmy winner, portraying Pete Marino, Scarpetta’s ex-partner and Dorothy’s husband. Simon Baker of The Mentalist plays Benton Wesley, Scarpetta’s FBI profiler husband. Ariana DeBose, fresh off her Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All at Once, appears as Lucy, Dorothy’s tech-savvy daughter, primarily raised by Kay.

A secondary storyline unfolds through flashbacks set during Scarpetta’s early career in the 1990s, with Rosy McEwen playing a younger version of Kay due to her striking resemblance to Kidman. Jake Cannavale, son of Bobby Cannavale, portrays the younger Marino, and Hunter Parrish appears as a youthful Benton Wesley.

DeBose’s role as Lucy represents a departure from her usual Broadway optimism, tackling themes of grief and loss. She revealed,

“I hope audiences will also find a way to have compassion for her.”

DeBose herself faced personal grief five months after filming when her mother passed away and noted,

“I’m more clear now than I was when I was actually shooting this series … that grief manifests in very different ways.”

Author Patricia Cornwell’s Involvement and Reflections

Patricia Cornwell, whose Scarpetta series has sold more than 120 million copies worldwide since its inception in 1990, was deeply involved in the development of the TV series. Drawing from her experience working alongside Virginia’s chief medical examiner, Cornwell is currently writing the 30th book in the series focusing on a serial poisoner.

Expressing enthusiasm for Kidman and Curtis’s portrayals, she remarked,

I’m learning things from them, when I sit back and I’m working on my book, suddenly I’m seeing Jamie in my head, or I’m hearing Nicole. My characters have come alive.”

Prime Video has a strong track record with adaptations of popular novels, such as Reacher, Jack Ryan, Bosch, and Cross, positioning Scarpetta as a potential new hit in the crime drama genre.

Upcoming Projects and Personal Milestones for Nicole Kidman

Alongside her work on Scarpetta, Kidman has several upcoming projects including the series Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Girls and Their Horses, and Discretion, as well as feature films The Young People and Practical Magic 2. Earlier this year, she finalized her divorce from country star Keith Urban.

Jamie Lee Curtis on Leadership and Hollywood Challenges

Jamie Lee Curtis, through her production company Comet Pictures, hopes the series serves as an inspiration to women in the entertainment industry by presenting a leadership model both in front of and behind the camera. She recounted her role in spearheading the project:

“I hope that they see people — women — doing all these different jobs. This show doesn’t exist without me calling Jason Blum, saying, ‘Hey, I found out that the rights to Patricia’s books are available. Let’s (expletive) go!’”

Curtis added,

“They will hear that and go, ‘Oh, that’s how you get (expletive) done!’ You persevere.”

Two seasons of Scarpetta have been ordered so far. Despite Curtis’s longstanding declaration to retire from acting on her own terms, she acknowledged the possibility that success from this project might influence her plans. She reflected,

“When my parents were in their heyday, they were enormous movie stars. There is a point where the industry just moves on. … I want to be able to end it on my own terms … I’ve been saying that since I was 30.”

She elaborated,

“I want to be able to walk away with the dignity and pride in my work, and not kind of be grasping at something that’s fading away.”

Nicole Kidman playfully responded to Curtis’s plans, saying,

“We’re not listening to that because we’re asking you to stay forever.”

Their banter mimics the closeness of real sisters as Kidman added with a smile,

“She will be working well past 100, probably, and we’ll all be going, ‘That’s an inspiration.’”
